Compare the whole proposal
One amount per session tells only part of the financial story. The overall proposal may consist of an intake, research, treatment and evaluation. Sometimes additional techniques are offered separately. Ask which parts are included.
Also compare what happens within an appointment. Only a short device treatment is something different from a consultation with research, explanation and active guidance. This does not mean that a longer consultation is always better, but that only price comparison per visit can be misleading.
Ask for an overview that you can read quietly. A good financial conversation doesn't make the content less important; it helps to decide whether the proposal suits your capabilities.
Compensation follows not only the technical name
The name shockwave does not determine independently whether your health insurance pays. It is also about the kind of care, indication, provider and policy conditions. The Healthcare Institute describes that compensation for physical therapy and practice therapy is subject to conditions.
A long-term symptom does not automatically mean that the treatment is covered by an insured chronic indication. The everyday meaning of chronic and the conditions of insurance are not the same.
Ask the provider how the appointment will be placed on the invoice and then check with your insurer what that means in your situation. A general ruling such as this is often reimbursed is not sufficient to know your own costs.
What questions do you ask the provider?
Use an overview with specific questions:
| Component | Request before takeoff |
|---|---|
| Intake | What do I pay for research and discussion of the plan? |
| Treatment | Is the rate per consultation, technique or combination? |
| Evaluation | Is a follow-up assessment included? |
| Additional care | Are additional parts discussed in advance? |
| Administration | What performance and provider are on the invoice? |
| Amendments | What happens financially if the plan is modified? |
The Dutch Healthcare Authority highlights advance information on tariffs and possible own payment. For your decision, it is especially necessary that you understand the amount you may be carrying.
Ask for cancellation policy as well. They are about a different type of cost than the treatment itself and may be relevant if you work irregularly or depend on transport.
What does free ultrasound mean with a paid intake?
Shockwave Clinics paid for the intake. When ultrasound is clinically meaningful, the ultrasound at the intake is free. The wording does not therefore mean that the intake or a complete journey is offered free of charge.
Ask what the intake amount includes and if any follow-up appointment is calculated separately. The substantive reason for ultrasound remains important: a free study is not automatically necessary.
A clear offer makes these conditions visible before you book. You should not only discover after the appointment that your free research was part of a paid consultation. The value of the intake is also in assessment and explanation if an ultrasound is not necessary.
Check the policy with the right information
In case of doubt, send your insurer the concrete description of the proposal. Provide the provider, type of appointment and any declaration data provided by the practice. Ask for compensation, terms and conditions and the part that may remain on your own account.
Note the difference between basic insurance and supplementary insurance. Contracting and the remaining number of treatments may also be important. Use the terms of your current policy year; an experience of someone else or an old fee offers no certainty.
Save the answer and the cost statement together. If the content of the route changes, a new check may be needed. A commitment about one type of consultation does not automatically apply to an additional technique or other provider.
Link costs to an evaluation moment
An affordable rate per session can generate high overall costs for an unlimited range. Therefore, the financial balance also includes the question of when to assess whether the treatment is of value.
Decide what outcome you want to achieve and what the next step is if it stays out. This avoids that additional agreements are mainly due to the wish that previous costs should still yield something.
You can say that a proposal is not financially feasible. Then ask which parts are priority and which alternatives exist. An appropriate plan shall take into account feasibility. Discussing costs is a normal part of choosing together, not judging how seriously you take your recovery.
Frequently asked questions
Is shockwave covered by basic insurance?
You can't just determine that based on the technical name. Compensation depends on the type of care and the applicable conditions. Ask how the provider declares and have your insurer assess what your policy will cover in this situation.
Is an additional insured consultation always fully paid for?
Not necessarily. The number of treatments available, maximum remuneration, provider and policy conditions can make a difference. Check the concrete proposal before take-off. Do not assume that all parts of a combined journey are covered by the same fee.
Are the rates on this information page a quote?
This page does not mention any personal rates or compensation commitments. For your situation, ask the provider for a current overview. The medical proposal can only become clear after assessment; the possible financial consequences should be understandable prior to treatment.
Can I just get an intake first?
An intake can help to discuss diagnosis, possibilities and costs before deciding on follow-up care. At Shockwave Clinics the intake is paid, with free ultrasound when clinically meaningful. Ask for the intake amount and conditions in advance.
