The computer is a situation, not a diagnosis.
Pain during typing or mice tells you when you notice symptoms, but not sure why. A tendon insertion, a nerve or any other cause may require attention. Therefore, a useful plan begins with the pattern of symptoms.
Thuisarts on tennis arm refers to frequent forearm use and repeated movements as relevant context. That's different than proving that one piece of work is your cause.
Describe where the pain is, how long you work in succession and what actions are especially difficult. Also include the moments when the computer is not central: carrying a bag, sports, jobs or a lot of phone usage. Without that overview, all attention can go to a mouse while the total day remains the same.
Look at price and variety
A small movement can become uncomfortable when you carry her out in a row. For the work interview, therefore, not only the action, but also the organisation is important. Do you have room to alternate or do you work hours without change?
Create a practical overview of tasks that can vary. A conversation, reading, consultation or other action may have a different pattern than continuous input work. That does not mean that every other task is automatically less burdensome; look at what your arm really does.
Discuss working arrangements that are enforceable. A planned break doesn't help much if deadlines make sure you have to make up for the same amount in a hurry. If the work organisation blocks the advice, consultation with management or company doctor is more useful than just setting reminders on your screen.
Support and posture: try directed, not dogmatic
You can see if the mouse is comfortable within reach, or you can work relaxed and or press an edge in a nasty place. Use that as a control of comfort, not as a search for one perfect posture that you have to maintain motionless all day long.
With pressure around the inside of the elbow and tingling, extra attention is needed. Radboudumc describes that long-term leaning and strong bending can irritate the ulnar nerve. Feeling in pink and ring finger and hand strength are then relevant topics for research.
A soft support or other position is not a substitute for assessment in such phenomena. In particular, increasing loss of power or permanent loss of feeling depends not only on testing a new workplace.
Create a small experiment of an adjustment
Change one clear part and agree what you want to achieve with it. For example, move the mouse closer so you can go less far, or organize a taskblock differently. This is a practical test of usability, not a scientific test of cause.
Not only note how much pain you are in, but whether the job is more feasible. Do you need to put more power into a new device? Can you work accurately? Is there any discomfort anywhere else? A product with the label ergonomics cannot fit you or your job.
Do not automatically buy multiple tools at once. When many things change at the same time, it becomes difficult to recognize what helps. A workplace consultant or company doctor can support you if you keep looking for yourself without any obvious improvement.
A working day card with four questions
Use this overview to prepare the conversation.
| Question | Example of what you write |
|---|---|
| When do I notice? | During long input work, after consultation or later at home |
| Where do I feel it? | Outer or inner elbow, forearm or fingers |
| What task prevails? | Mice, type, hold or support |
| What kind of appointment could help? | Division of tasks, workplace control or guidance |
Add one rule about activities outside working time. The goal is not to lay down all responsibility on you, but to make a full picture. Work and leisure cannot always be planned separately.
Example: You adjust the mouse, but use heavy tools for a long time after work. This second activity does not have to be the cause, but is important information for a realistic agreement on arm use.
Where medical assessment is required
Contact us if normal tasks become increasingly difficult, the pain greatly reduces your work or the diagnosis remains unclear. Also discuss when a previous plan makes no noticeable difference, so you don't keep trying endlessly new devices.
Tinglings, less feeling or hand weakness may require a different assessment than local pain with a tendon insertion. Radboudumc describes physical examination and, if necessary, nerve examination in suspected ulnar neuropathy. What tests are required with you will be determined individually.
When a tennis elbow is established, explanations and activity arrangements are usually the starting point. Shockwave and a brace do not automatically make sense because you do computer work. A treatment is part of the diagnosis and a specific purpose, not the kind of agency you sit on.
Frequently asked questions
Is a vertical mouse the solution?
You can't say that in advance for everyone. The tool must fit your task and be comfortable to use. Try a change directed and review the execution. An ergonomic label doesn't prove that your symptom disappeared because of this or that the mouse was the cause.
Do I have to maintain a perfect working posture?
An attitude that is pleasant and practical can help, but constantly holding one position is not a general recovery rule. Also look at variety, expensive and task organization. In case of pressure at a painful place or tingling, a targeted assessment is more important than sitting upright.
What does tingling of pinky and ring finger mean?
That could be a reason to investigate the ulnar nerve. The nerve runs along the inside of the elbow. A pattern of tingling doesn't prove diagnosis yet, but belongs in the conversation, especially if you also notice less hand strength or skill.
When do I get in touch with the company doctor?
If symptoms impede your work, agreements prove unenforceable or you need help with appropriate adjustments. Prepare concrete tasks and limitations. The company doctor can discuss the loadability and work organisation; only a general advice to take breaks is sometimes insufficient.
